6 Effective SEO Tips for Beginners

In the competitive world of search engine rankings, every business is competing for a spot on the first page. Because when your site rises to the top of the search engine results, it means more exposure, which means more leads, more sales, and more positive reviews. In the past, the amount of traffic that your website received determined its place in the rankings. This is still true today, but with the power of search engine optimization (SEO), even small businesses that are just starting out can jump to the top of the search engine rankings.

Are you looking for fresh ways to promote your company’s website? Here are some tips on helping your website float to the top of the Google search results.

1. Use Relevant Keywords

Think about the company and the products and services that it offers. What kinds of searches would customers make if they were looking for your product? For example, if your company sells vegan makeup, they might search “vegan makeup brands” or “cruelty-free lipstick brands.” Figure out what your customers might search for, then use this knowledge to incorporate relevant keywords into your website’s content. This makes it more likely that your site will appear near the top of the search results.

2. Offer Quality Content

This might sound like common sense, but people who are new to the SEO world tend to stuff their websites with keywords and filler. It might help them attract an audience, but if the website looks unprofessional, the customers are unlikely to stay. On the other hand, if the website is professional, relevant, and well-written, customers will see it as a reputable business that’s worth investing in. You do want to sprinkle some keywords throughout the text, but don’t overdo it–just add the keywords in naturally instead of forcing them into the content.

3. Optimize the URL

A commonly-overlooked aspect of SEO is the website URL. A clunky URL with strings of letters and numbers is less attractive to search engines. A simple URL that includes an SEO keyword is much easier for search engines to process. It’s also much less confusing and easier to remember for potential customers. And if they share their website on social media, a clean URL is much more appealing than a block of gibberish.

4. Write Relevant Blog Posts

A set of well-written blog posts can be just as vital as the website content itself. With blog posts, you can attract a totally different set of customers who are looking for tips or advice without necessarily wanting to buy a product. Most people click on blog posts without looking at the source, so it’s likely that they won’t even notice that a post is a form of advertisement. Think about your company and what kind of questions people are asking about its products. For example, a vegan makeup company could write a blog post about the ingredients that go into cruelty-free makeup. Anyone who searches “what is vegan makeup made of” could stumble on that post–and while they’re on the website, they might decide to check out some of the products.

5. Optimize the Page Title and Meta Description

The website title offers yet another opportunity for keyword optimization. Make sure your website has a clean, simple title with an SEO keyword or two. The meta description essentially acts as your first impression, so make sure it’s direct, concise, and has a “hook” to entice the reader. Remember that you want your website to stand out among all the other thousands of sites in the search results.

6. Optimize Your Images

Optimizing the images on your website can be just as important as optimizing the text. You can add alt text to your pictures so the search engine can index your images. Adding alt text also helps your images rank higher on Google images. However, your alt text should be short: it’s only the size of a tooltip, so don’t cram it with SEO keywords. Instead, stick to a simple, concise description that tells the viewer exactly what they’re looking at.
