What is an ISP (Internet Service Provider)?
An ISP completes the dial-up connection between your modem and the Internet. Besides the connection to the Internet, the ISP also gives you an email account and access to the World Wide Web.

How do I know if people are visiting my site?
Website statistics are an integral part of all new Freecom websites from the BizSite upwards and provide you with information about the number of visitors to your website. This information is accessed through the back office administration facility of your website. If you have one of freecom.net's earlier packages which did not contain website statistics then please contact our Sales department on 08708 800 100 who will be happy to discuss options for the provision of this service.

    Email

What is the difference between POP3 and Webmail?
Webmail accounts are email accounts you can access over the Internet through your web browser (i.e. Netscape or Internet Explorer). Hotmail and Yahoo! Mail are examples of web based free email accounts. POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3) email accounts are accessible through email applications such as Outlook. Most free Internet Service Providers only offer one of these email options.

However, freecom.net offer both POP3 and webmail, so you can use either. POP3 may be more convenient for you to use in the workplace whereas webmail enables you to access your email from any computer at any time. The same username and password is used for both services. Please note that if you wish to use both services that mail can only be viewed by webmail if it has not already been downloaded via your POP3 account.

My email account gets 'locked' when downloading my email, why is this?
When you collect your email using Freecom, you are accessing the mail server. All of the mail that you receive in Outlook Express/Outlook comes from the mail server - which is essentially just a computer with a very large hard disk that is dedicated to sending, receiving and storing emails.

Occasionally an email can become 'locked' in the mail server - often because it contains a large attachment. When this happens, the email may keep downloading in Outlook Express/Outlook but never 'arrive' in your Inbox. If an email gets stuck in this way it can block other emails from being downloaded, so you need to manually connect to the mail server to delete the 'blockage'. This will then allow you to receive the rest of your mail.

The easiest way to do this is by using Freecom.net's webmail service and deleting the offending email here so that other mail can be downloaded to your computer. Once you have logged into the webmail service you will be able to spot the large email by viewing its size on the right hand side of the screen. Place a tick in the box next to the email and then press the delete button at the bottom.

Once the email has been deleted here and you have logged out you can then return to Outlook/Outlook Express and download any other email that may be waiting for you.

    Dial-Up

How do I know if I currently have a dial-up account?
If you access the Internet using a modem and a standard telephone line, you have a dial-up account with an online service such as AOL or CompuServe or with an ISP such as Netcom, Concentric, or Sprint.
Will I have to pay telephone charges?
Although the Internet access freecom.net provide is free, you are responsible for any phone charges incurred when connecting to our dial-up service. If you are using our 0845 dial-up number then you will be charged national rate call charges by your telephone service provider. To benefit from unmetered Internet access then please call our Sales team on 08708 800 100 who would be happy to discuss the Surftime Anytime package which is supported by freecom.net.

The Internet Connection Wizard keeps launching repeatedly, how do I stop this happening?
  • Double click on the 'My Computer' icon on your desktop.
  • Double click on the hard drive (C:)
  • Double click on 'Program Files'
  • Double click on the 'Internet Explorer' folder
  • Right click on the 'Signup Folder', then click on Delete
  • Confirm that you want to send the folder to the Recycle bin

    Domain Names
How do I register another domain name?
Please log on to www.registeryourdomain.co.uk alternatively please call our Sales Department on 08708 800 100 who would be happy to advise on domain names available to purchase.

What is the difference between .com, .net, and .org domain names?
The domain suffixes are intended to differentiate between various types of organisations on the Internet. Generally, the following rules apply:
.com - businesses and commercial enterprises
.net - network-related organizations and enterprises
.org - charitable or non-profit organizations

The domain suffix type itself has no bearing on accessibility on the Internet from a technical standpoint, but over time the .com domain type has become the most popular and recognisable on the Internet.

Who owns the domain name once it is registered?
You do. It is yours to use, to rent out, or to sell. At the end of the initial registration period (2 years for UK) you will be given the option to pay to renew your registration. The domain name is yours until you choose not to renew your registration.

Can I transfer the registrar of my domain?
Yes you can as long as there is another domain available for your site to sit on. Transferring your domain can be done at a cost of £35 + Vat. Please contact enquiries@freecom.net for relevant instructions.

Why am I being charged for renewal?
Domain names are usually registered for a period of one or two years, depending on the suffix after the dot. After that period they have to be renewed.

What happens if I don't pay you?
If your domain name is not required in connection with an existing website contract with us, then your registration will lapse. The domain name will then be available for anyone to purchase If your domain name is required for us to continue to provide services under an ongoing contract, then it must be renewed, which we will do automatically. If you do not arrange to pay us the renewal charge when due, then we will add a surcharge of £20 plus VAT to cover our administrative costs of collection later. However, if you are certain that you do not wish to renew your domain name despite possible adverse effects, please contact our customer services team who will be pleased to discuss the situation with you.

Can I pay the Registry (Nominet, Network SolutionsTucows) directly?
Yes but it will cost you more money - for example Nominet charge non-members £80 + vat. Freecom is a member so we benefit from a reduced rate, which we pass on to our customers.

Do all Internet Service providers Charge?
Yes, they all charge you one way or another, but the cost may be hidden in the small print!

How long will the domain name be renewed for?
Two years for .co.uk and one year for .com, .org and .net

I don't want the domain any longer ? Can I choose not to renew it?
Are you sure because if it isn't renewed it will eventually become available for registration again, and any services which need it will be lost. As well as losing the search engine references to any website hosted on that domain, which may take a long time to be re-established, do not forget the effects of any email addresses which disappear, and the cost of amending any published information which contains that domain name.
